POWER-GEN Europe and Renewable Energy World Europe, the leading conference and exhibition for the international power and renewable industries, celebrated a successful second day. The show, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, provided expert industry insight and an exciting programme of debate to over 9000 visitors at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

Day two of the conference covered a number of key power industry trends, including mastering the digital era, renewable energy strategy, energy storage, gas fired and steam based generation, and modern plant management.

A highlight of the day was a live expert panel debate on financing energy projects, which took place in the Enel Knowledge Arena. Investment and risk were key focuses of the discussion, and the panel agreed that market maturity and the reliability of technology are the key drivers for established companies and innovators looking to secure investment and funding in the current market.

Panellists agreed unanimously that renewable subsidies are too high in the EU and there is a need for regulations to push for higher CO2 taxes instead.

Another highpoint was the Stadtwerke Leaders Roundtable in the Amec Foster Wheeler Global Power Arena. The speakers emphasised the fundamental importance of having the right business models if the industry is to realise the potential of digitalisation. It was agreed that one potential model could involve distributed renewables, primarily solar panels and wind turbines.

On the exhibition floor, delegates enjoyed numerous networking opportunities and technical insights from more than 430 exhibitors. Attendees also had the chance to benefit from free advice from commercial experts in the Diplomatic Quarter.

Thursday 29th June is the final day of POWER-GEN Europe and Renewable Energy World Europe. Must-attend events include the Dragons Den, where energy innovators will have a unique opportunity to pitch their ideas to a committee of experts. The Knowledge Arena and Global Power Arenas will also be hosting a final day of presentations, and the show will conclude with the Closing Reception and Best Paper Awards.
