FEATURES EDITORIAL COMMENTS - What is in this issue and what does it mean. Bob Hetherington ALTERNATIVE ENERGY INTERVIEW - INVESTING IN PV - PETER LYNCH - I see great potential in the nano technology area. It is my feeling that if there is a huge blockbuster technology that is going to emerge and "take over" the PV industry, I feel that it will somehow involve breakthroughs and application of nano technology to the area of photovoltaics. THE HALF PROGRAM - The Half Program has proven to be a very good investment - we spent a total of $7,525 for all the energy reduction projects, and we are saving $4,007 per year in energy costs! Gary Reysa RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKETS DRIVEN BY CLIMATE CHANGE - Nanotechnology is undoubtedly one of the key technologies which will influence energy efficiency. New Study by Helmut Kaiser Consultancy ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS POWER SEMICON WEST - Significant strides were made at SEMICON West to have the semiconductor equipment manufacturers join the PV/solar energy bandwagon. BRAZIL ETHANOL MARKET - Brazil seeks to produce enough ethanol to replace 10% of the gasoline consumed worldwide by 2012, which requires doubling its current production and increasing the share of exports in total output to 20% from the current 15%. £14 BILLION TIDAL BARRAGE - Following the Energy White Paper released on 23rd May 2007, The Renewable Energy Centre announces its support for the Government's decision to once again consider the benefits of tidal power, but also voices its concerns about the environmental implications of the proposed Severn Barrage. The Renewable Energy Centre CONCENTRATED SOLAR FOR HAWAII - The collector being enclosed or open faced would require surface care and significant weekly cleaning. Sopogy's panels would park at night, meaning the collector surfaces are protected so as not to be exposed. Adrian Akau and Darren T. Kimura GREEN ENERGY OPTIONS IN THE CARIBBEAN - In the Caribbean, the options are essentially the same, but practically wind and solar energy are the most promising short term solutions. James Post PLANT JATROPHA - GO GREEN - REDUCE POVERTY - A hectare of jatropha yields more than four times as much fuel per hectare as soybean, and more than ten times that of corn. Brijesh Rawat SOLAR HEATING IN SASKATCHEWAN - The research showed that these panels will work in northern climates. The system was operated over a one month period in February and March when temperatures were at times lower than -20º C. Bill Elliott ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUTS - Should we choose to have 20% of our power production ideologically clean, or 80% of our electricity needs atmospherically clean? The answer is: we should do both. Steve Clemens RENEWABLE ENERGY FAIR - Reducing one's energy overhead costs relatively little and produces a revenue stream that appreciates over time. Replacing one's energy infrastructure with on-site renewable systems, in contrast, will require a sizable up-front financial commitment relative to what it will produce over time. Michael Vickerman PUTTING DOWN ROOTS - Only an in-depth, integrated approach to energy access ensures a sustained income rise. Binu Parthan SOLAR PONDS - This article does not pretend to be an exhaustive dissertation on solar ponds, but it should be enough to wet the appetite of anyone who is searching for a relatively simple almost passive way of collecting the sun's heat and energy. Brenda H. Nelson SAVE SWIMMING POOL ENERGY - Most pool owners know that you don't need to run your filter as much in the winter as you do during the summer months. When the water is cold, bacteria and algae don't do much, and you can get away with running your pump less. Steven D. Allen |
MORE FEATURES ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION THE AIR CAR - At the moment, four models have been made: a car, a taxi (5 passengers), a Pick-Up truck and a van. The final selling price will be approximately 5.500 pounds. Moteur Development International HYDROGEN STATIONS ARE SPRINGING UP EVERYWHERE! - Spring has been a busy period for hydrogen fueling stations, with five stations recently opening worldwide. Sandra Curtin KITEBOATING - The potential kite power vessels will have many applications for fishing, powering ferryboats, and barges, to providing emergency power to motorboats. The sky is the limit for the future of kiteboating; the ocean is waiting. Dan Tracy INTERVIEW WITH RICHARD J. KASPER OF GEM - Today, over 40 of the 50 United States have enacted laws that allow for NEVs to be driven on city streets. As the awareness of NEVs becomes more widespread, and the benefits of owning them and driving them realized, we see significant market potential in the future. SMALL ELECTRIC VEHICLES IMPROVE LIVABILITY - A second generation of Personal Vehicles is being created with performance and range similar to its ancestors, while meeting the priorities of a society re-defining the meaning of community. Mark Murphy ELECTRIC BIKES AND LARGE E-SCOOTERS - E-machines have no more maintenance than a bicycle. They are simple, efficient, safe and fun to ride Andy Reich A BAD BOY WITH A GOOD SIDE - It wasn't long before they expanded uses for their favorite new toy, attaching farm equipment to the buggy's hitch (also standard) and using it to mow, till and plant fields. Lisa Price
FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON - If successful, the SS2
and the WK2 could pave the way for a much larger craft that could ferry several
hundred passengers into low orbital space and the land in another country or
continent without the need for expensive jet fuel.
James Russo THE ENVIRONMENT GREENROOFS BENEFITS OUTWEIGH COSTS - The only severe downsides of having greenroofs in a desert climate are cost of installing it, and then the water use for irrigation. But as we'll see, the water needed for irrigation is more than covered by available greywater. Steve Clemens
RISE TO THE CARBON CHALLENGE - The
Government recently announced the launch of their "Carbon Challenge" which aims
to create five zero carbon or near carbon developments throughout the UK in
order to provide working examples to the building industry. The Construction
