Stuart Energy Uses Zero Emission Hydrogen Power to Weather the Power Outage

The HES used its stored hydrogen to run a generator that provided power to the Company's critical systems including computer network, telecommunication systems, elevators, fire and security systems and emergency lighting.

TORONTO, ON, August 18, 2003 - Stuart Energy Systems weathered last week's major power outage by providing clean back-up power to its facility using its zero-emission Hydrogen Energy Station (HES). The HES used its stored hydrogen to run a generator that provided power to the Company's critical systems including computer network, telecommunication systems, elevators, fire and security systems and emergency lighting.

"The power outages in the United States and Canada underscores the need for businesses to have reliable backup power sources," commented Jon Slangerup, President and CEO of Stuart Energy. "While most of that backup power was supplied by polluting diesel generators, we were able to use clean hydrogen fuel to keep our critical systems in operation. "

The Stuart Energy Hydrogen Energy Station (HES) uses water and electricity to produce hydrogen for back-up power and vehicle fueling. The system stores hydrogen until it is needed for backup power or for fueling vehicles. The system installed at Stuart Energy's facility can produce and store 60 kg of hydrogen, enough to run the critical systems of the 125,000 square foot facility for 15 hours. The number of systems the HES is capable of running is determined by the size of the HES system and the amount of stored hydrogen. By adding a hydrogen fuel dispenser to the same HES power system, the stored hydrogen can also be used to fuel hydrogen-powered vehicles.
