GEM vehicles: a behind-the-scenes treasure at the Pacific Life Open

Indian Wells, Calif. - While fans watch tennis balls rocket back and forth on the courts at the Pacific Life Open, there will be another semi-spherical object smoothly gliding behind the scenes of the event.

For the third year, Global Electric Motorcars (GEM), the nation's leading manufacturer of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV) and the official NEV of the Pacific Life Open, will provide vehicles to shuttle the athletes, media, and VIP guests around the tournament complex.

"GEM is honored to sponsor one of the great international professional tennis tournaments," said Rick Kasper, president and chief operating officer of Global Electric Motorcars. "By being the tournament's official NEV, we are able to demonstrate the versatility and practicality of the GEM battery-electric vehicle. People will be able to see first-hand that it's sporty and fun to drive, while offering efficient utility."

Several GEM e4 models, as well as the new GEM e6 six-passenger models, will be used to transport tournament athletes, media and VIP guests around the complex throughout the course of the event. Tournament staff will also use the GEM eS and GEM eL utility models to transport various cargo and equipment throughout the complex and keep things moving behind the scenes.

"The GEM e6 is great for transporting people around the tournament venue," stated Kasper. "With the GEM vehicle's minivan-like driving height, people can easily slide in and out. In addition, the GEM vehicle's automotive design and proven performance make it more than just a comfortable ride. It's also durable and reliable, which is critical for meeting the demands of tournament activities."

The GEM vehicle is a safety-equipped plug-in battery electric vehicle ideal for short-distance travel. It is commonly used in settings such as planned communities; city centers; military bases; rural areas; local, state and national parks; industrial developments; airports; and college and university campuses. There are more than 33,000 GEM vehicles on the road today in the U.S. and overseas.

The GEM vehicle was the first multipurpose Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) available for sale from a major automaker. With a top speed of 25 miles per hour, it's street-legal in most states and can be driven on roads posted at 35 miles per hour or less.

As a zero-emissions vehicle, the GEM vehicle is a perfect alternative to gas-powered vehicles. Households with a NEV eliminate an average of two cold starts per day, saving the air from ozone precursors that accompany each start of a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.

GEM vehicles meet all federal safety standards for Low Speed Vehicles, and are eligible for incentives and tax credits from clean-air districts and other governmental agencies.
