D.C. Home to be Weatherized for FREE to Kick-off Breakthrough National Green Jobs Training Program

Pre-Labor Day LIUNA Event Will Highlight the Potential to Create Good Jobs and
Save Energy by Weatherizing Millions of Energy Inefficient Homes a Year

Washington, D.C. - Members of LIUNA - the Laborers' International Union of North America - will weatherize the home of a young Washington, D.C. couple on Wednesday September 2 to demonstrate energy efficiency work that could employ thousands of workers across the country in the emerging weatherization industry being fueled by federal economic recovery investments. The pre-Labor Day event will highlight the innovative work that LIUNA is doing to reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil and create family-supporting green jobs for American workers.

National and local officials will join LIUNA General President Terry O'Sullivan to tour the home with the homeowners and discuss federal and state investments in weatherization while LIUNA workers insulate the home's windows and walls, wrap the hot-water heater and fix other energy wasting deficiencies uncovered by a comprehensive audit.

LIUNA has designed a breakthrough national program to train thousands of workers in communities across the country. Trainees learn detailed weatherization skills and have the opportunity to advance in family-supporting careers. The effort, already underway in two other states, can help create a viable new American industry that will put people back to work and help reduce energy bills for millions of families over the next 10 years, reducing our nation's dependence on foreign oil.
