SGS Prepares for the New Challenges in the Renewable Energy Sector

To answer new challenges and support the development in the Renewable Energy Sector, SGS appointed a new Global Renewable Energy Competence Centre Manager and welcomes new colleagues in the Technical Office Wind Energy.

The growing market for renewable energy and the attraction of offshore power generation account for the current extension of SGS´ Renewable Energy Competence Centre. SGS aims to answer the growing need for high quality inspection, verification, testing and certification services in this sector and announces the appointment of two managers and the enlargement of the technical team.


Torsten Muuss, has been appointed to the position of Global Renewable Energy Competence Centre Manager, effective January 1, 2010. In his new role Torsten will focus on driving and supporting the development of the renewable energy services, particularly for wind and solar energy across the worldwide SGS network. He will ensure a continuous level of expertise required to execute the SGS Global Renewable Energy Services on a qualified, reliable and consistent basis.

For the development and build out of services for the Renewable Energy Sector, SGS appointed Daniel Hope as Global Business Development Manager. In his position, Daniel will have the responsibility to ensure that all SGS Wind Energy services are harmonized globally and carried out in accordance with the highest technical requirements of the Wind Energy Industry.

Within the Global Competence Centre for SGS Renewable Energy Daniel will assist in developing the SGS Group Strategy and Business Plan for Wind Energy Services focusing on regional business development. Daniel joined SGS in November, 2009.

In addition, SGS has extended its Technical Wind Energy Expert team with three professionals and welcomes Fabian Broicher, Axel Schweighardt and Christoph Urch on board. To strengthen SGS's position in offshore and onshore wind farm project development, these colleagues will support the service work.

SGS Wind Energy Services works as an independent project surveyor and offers verification, inspection, supervision, testing and certification services, worldwide for onshore and offshore wind farm projects and is currently involved in 18 offshore wind farm projects all around Germany and continuous to put an emphasis on this technology.

In 2009, SGS paid a particular attention for the business trend in the wind technology and introduced new services and solutions, such as Legal Mapping or Risk Management Advisory Services in order to improve the service delivery to the clients. SGS aims to gain confidence in wind farm project and secure high quality of wind farms through providing experienced staff and technical expertise.

In addition, SGS will open the SGS Wind Energy Technology Center in China, which focuses on comprehensive range of full-scale blade testing services. This is a significant investment and a great achievement about which SGS can be proud.
