Corvus Energy to Supply Lithium-Ion-Powered Batteries to Foss Hybrid Retrofit Project

Based on the success of its first hybrid tug, Carolyn Dorothy, Foss announced plans in August 2010 to retrofit a sister vessel, Campbell Foss, with the Foss/Aspin Kemp and Associates (AKA) XeroPoint hybrid system and Corvus batteries.

Corvus Energy announced today it will supply lithium-ion battery packs to support Foss Maritime's project to retrofit its tug, Campbell Foss, with hybrid technology.

Corvus' Titan series lithium-ion battery packs, which are built around a new Dow Kokam nickel-manganese-cobalt-based cell, can last 10 times as long, have four to 10 times the power and energy storage of lead-acid batteries in half the volume and a quarter of the weight.

Each pack delivers at least 22 percent more power and energy density than the most powerful lithium-ion phosphate batteries used in electric vehicles and consumer products. The result equals cost savings in the form of reduced battery replacement and maintenance, increased usable battery power, a smaller environmental footprint and less weight on the vessel.

The Campbell Foss battery pack design, integrated with AKA's XeroPoint hybrid system, will reduce engine idling and provide light maneuvering capability.

With the success of the Carolyn Dorothy, Foss proved that a hybrid tug could deliver full power and operational capabilities while significantly reducing fuel and emissions and saving on maintenance costs. It is expected that the retrofitted Campbell Foss will achieve fuel savings of at least 25 percent and maintenance savings of approximately 30 percent. More importantly, third party testing on the Carolyn Dorothy validated emissions reductions of 73 percent particulate matter, 51 percent NOx and 27 percent CO2 reductions.
