SunBorne selects Titan Tracker heliostat design

SunBorne selects Titan Tracker heliostat design for 1MWth pilot solar power tower system in India

June, 15th 2011

SunBorne Energy is developing a 1MWth solar power tower system. This R&D project is jointly funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, and SunBorne Energy. It involves the cooperation from international renowned solar experts such as Dr Yogi Goswami, Dr Manuel Romero and Dr Aldo Stienfeld. The collaborating institutions include University of South Florida, USA; IMDEA Energy, Spain; and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. This project tries to address the current technology limitations present in Indian industry with an international team that has extensive experience in power tower systems and energy storage.

This cutting-edge R&D project will include a field of heliostats designed by TITAN TRACKER. SunBorne team is adopting Titan Tracker's heliostat design through unique field layout and indigenized mirror facet manufacturing technology. Principal investigator of the R&D project, Dr. Nitin Goel stated "We have selected Titan Trackers because of its performance according to our requirements but also combined with a relevant potential for cost reduction. This will allow us to achieve our targets for next commercial CSP projects in India".

TITAN TRACKER heliostat design is characterized by its minimal deformations, zero backlash and continuous movement in azimuth proving extremely high accuracy and reliability. In turn, Mr. Juan P. Cabanillas, Managing Director of Titan trackers explains "We are really pleased to work with SunBorne as a business partner in India for a long-term cooperation. We are proud to have reached about 30% cost reduction in the manufacturing of our tracking systems and heliostats after the latest developments"

The current status of this project will be presented during SOLARPACES conference www.solarpaces.org next September in Granada, Spain where is expected to attend the most relevant players in the CSP market around the world.
SUNBORNE ENERGY is an Indian solar power developer working towards making affordable, utility scale solar energy a reality in India. It is backed by General Catalyst Partners and Khosla Ventures, prominent US based private equity funds with assets in excess of $1.5 billion each and an experience of building businesses in India.

SUNBRONE ENERGY intends to become a leading solar power developer. This will translate into developing projects of over 1 GW of power in the next 5-7 years, commissioning over 200 MW of solar power plants by 2014 and achieving grid parity in next 5-7 years. SunBorne Energy's scope of functions include research and development, localizing capabilities in design, manufacturing, engineering, construction, distribution and operations. It is developing Utility Scale Solution Plants in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh with other States in the pipeline.

WS510 Secondary Standard

WS510 Secondary Standard

In the monitoring of large photovoltaic (Utility Scale), in assessing potential sites (Solar-assessment), or in up and coming electricity cost saving initiatives projects (Commercial & Industrial), the WS510 now provides the market a secondary standard pyranometer, ultrasonic wind speed, ultrasonic wind direction, temperature, pressure and humidity all in a single unit.. This sensor meets the high demands of the world meteorological organization (WMO) through the active valving at air temperature measurement and the inertia- and maintenance-free measurement of wind speed and wind direction on the ultrasonic principle. Equipped with a Kipp & Zonen pyranometer of the secondary standards, the WS510-UMB Compact weather sensor from Lufft unites the precision of a variety of meteorological individual sensors in a single all-in-one device, for the first time.
