Sustainable Oil Service recognized for excellence in environmental protection
Boulder, Colorado – Biodiesel recycler Sustainable Oil Service (S.O.S.) is pleased to announce that its Food-to-Fuel Biodiesel Program partnership with Boulder County has been presented with a 2011 National Association of Counties Achievement Award in the Environmental Protection and Energy category. The County received the award on July 21st at the Boulder County Commissioners Office.
This award represents Sustainable Oil Service's commitment to protecting the environment of Boulder County through innovation in producing clean burning biodiesel made solely from recycled waste cooking oils.
The biodiesel from Sustainable Oil Service fuels the Boulder County municipal vehicle fleet and fulfills the county's quantity, quality and price requirements. The County has saved three cents per gallon by using the recycled oil from S.O.S., which utilizes waste cooking oil from local restaurants, thus reforming the "food versus fuel" to "food-to-fuel" debate. Since July of 2010, S.O.S. has assisted Boulder County in removing 210,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air through fueling its fleet.
In addition to making biodiesel, S.O.S. creates a biodegradable cleaning agent as a byproduct that is given to the restaurants where the waste oil is collected. The use of this cleaning product helps to close another loop in the fuel system, further contributing to cleaner air for Boulder County.
Sustainable Oil Service demonstrates its full dedication to environmental protection through its unique status as a zero-waste facility by converting all waste streams into recycled products. The facility runs a biodiesel-powered collection fleet and its facilities are 100% wind powered.
