Dr. Les Shephard is Robert F. McDermott Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Director for the Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Previously, Shephard served as Vice President of the Energy, Water and Nonproliferation Division at Sandia National Laboratories where he lead programs that contributed to economic prosperity and global stability in regions of high strategic importance to the United States.

He was formerly Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of EOTT Energy, a $12 billion NYSE corporation. Prior to joining EOTT Energy Corp., Mr. Burke served as Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tesoro Petroleum Corp. (a Fortune 500 Corporation) from 1992 to 1996.

Shephard and Burke are lining up high profile energy industry leaders to join the Texas Renewables 2013 agenda. High on that list is keynote speaker Dr. Dan Arvizu, Director and Chief Executive of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). NREL is the DOE's primary laboratory for energy efficiency and renewable energy research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (Alliance). Dr. Arvizu is President of Alliance.

Dr. Arvizu has become one of the world's leading experts on renewable energy and sustainable energy. He has briefed the United States Congress numerous times and given state-of-technology presentations and keynote addresses at dozens of national and international conferences. As NREL's laboratory director, he has established and implemented a new institutional strategy to position the lab for higher impact and contributions to national and global energy challenges. During his tenure as laboratory director, he has overseen an R&D budget with a contract value of over $2.5B including over $500M for new infrastructure improvements.
