Offshore substation platform: TÜV SÜD wins further certification contract for Gemini wind farm

Typhoon Offshore B.V., Amsterdam, on behalf of Equity investors Gemini has commissioned TÜV SÜD to carry out the certification of two offshore substation platforms for Gemini, the wind farm to be located in the North Sea off the coast of the Netherlands.

The certification of the 300-MW high-voltage substations located on platforms is required for the licensing process by the Dutch authorities. Certification by TÜV SÜD covers review of the design documentation and the geotechnical report, but also testing of the support structure and the topside platform. "We are very pleased that we will continue to support Typhoon Offshore in this project", says Ulrich Knopf, Project Manager at Offshore Wind Services, TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH in Hamburg. "We can contribute our experience as one of the leading certification organisations for onshore and offshore wind farms." TÜV SÜD also carries out certification of the 150 wind-turbine support structures for the Gemini wind farm. With this additional order, TÜV SÜD's participation covers the complete design process of the offshore wind farm.

The Gemini offshore wind project is located in the North Sea, approximately 55 km north of the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog. The wind farm, with a total installed capacity of 600 MW, is planned to supply 785,000 households per year with clean, renewable electricity. The sub-station platforms convert the alternating current produced by the wind turbines into high-voltage alternating current that can be distributed onshore with reduced losses. TÜV SÜD's experts at Offshore Wind Services have long-standing experience with the certification of wind turbines and their associated components.

The international service provider also supports planners, contractors, investors and owners in risk analyses, occupational health and safety concepts and quality assurance during construction. Other core fields of activity include quality assurance in component manufacturing and periodic testing and inspection throughout the service life of the wind turbines.
