First Results of Varentec Grid Edge Control to be Presented at DistribuTECH 2014

Varentec is the first company to successfully deploy a large number of distributed, dynamic voltage control devices to optimize a distribution power network.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 28, 2014 -- Varentec, a pioneer in Grid Edge Control™ solutions for electric utilities, will have results from its Grid Edge Control™ technology presented Thursday, January 30 at 8:30am at the DistribuTECH conference in San Antonio, TX. Varentec is the first company to successfully deploy a large number of distributed, dynamic voltage control devices to optimize a distribution power network.

Jason Handley, Duke project engineer is lead author of the paper 'Dynamic Voltage and VAR Control via a Distributed Architecture' and will present the paper, with Dr. Deepak Divan, President and CTO of Varentec as co-presenter. The presentation will provide results of a pilot with over 100 Varentec ENGO Volt/VAR control units demonstrating the potential for decentralized control at multiple points along a distribution grid power line. The 'grid edge' is an area of growing concern for the utility industry, as it impacts key utility initiatives such as grid integration of distributed solar, and the ability to achieve many critical grid optimization benefits including energy conservation. Dynamic Volt/VAR control at the grid edge is a first application of decentralized solutions by the utility industry.

Dr. Deepak Divan, President and CTO of Varentec said, "We are the first company to deploy over 100 Volt/VAR control units on a single feeder to demonstrate coordinated grid edge control. This is a new concept for the utility industry. We are working with multiple utility customer installations, advancing grid edge analytics that show how distributed control can add value to grid operators. The grid edge is an area of growing interest for the utility industry, as it impacts key utility initiatives such as grid integration of distributed solar and energy conservation."

The benefits possible from Grid Edge Control include better grid reliability, improved power quality, and ability to absorb renewable energy onto the grid.
