Veolia and Wheelabrator Technologies Extend Supply Agreement to Reduce Baltimore's Carbon Footprint

Contract renewal ensures that nearly half of the steam delivered to Veolia's customers is "Green Steam" that originates from Wheelabrator's renewable energy plant

BALTIMORE, Feb. 26, 2014 — Veolia Energy North America, a leading operator and developer of efficient energy solutions, and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc, a renewable waste-to-energy company with operations in Baltimore since 1985, have extended their 28-year partnership after the two companies recently completed a contract renewal.

The "Green Steam" — steam generated by renewable energy — produced by Wheelabrator's Baltimore facility supplies nearly 50 percent of the steam Veolia delivers through its extensive Baltimore district energy system, which provides steam, hot water and chilled water to 230 customers in the central business district, as well as Inner Harbor East. The continued supply agreement between Veolia and Wheelabrator helps to reduce Baltimore's total greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 47,000 tons per year or the equivalent of removing 8,400 cars from the road.

Wheelabrator's Baltimore waste-to-energy facility successfully reduces the volume of incoming waste by approximately 90 percent, providing disposal of up to 2,250 tons per day of post-recycled municipal solid waste and generating enough clean energy to power about 68,000 homes and businesses.

In May 2011, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley signed Senate Bill 690 into law that expanded Tier 1 renewable sources to support the State's aggressive renewable energy standard. The legislation puts waste-to-energy plants, including the Wheelabrator facility, on par with solar and wind in the state's renewable energy standard. The state has a goal of generating 20 percent of its energy from Tier 1 renewable resources by 2022 and intends to achieve that goal through as much in-state generation as possible. Clean technology such as waste-to-energy, especially when coupled with district energy, helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create more renewable energy and stimulate investment in the state.
