PVinsights : Solar components experience pricing downtrend in May.

With price cuts in the solar component supply chain, polysilicon demand and pricing is also negatively impacted. In China, some wafer companies lower production utilization and cut polysilicon procurement.

Overall module price continues to decline this week. Since system deployment in China and Japan remains weak, overall module demand is negatively affected. In China, investors lack confidence in funding solar projects, leading to the slow deployment in the country. Since Japan has recently cut its FIT in Apr, system developer push for module price cuts to maintain IRR level before the FIT adjustment. In EU, module price remains on the downtrend. While in the US, module price remains flat with solid PV deployment in the country. Therefore, overall module price drops this week.

Overall cell price is also on the downtrend this week. Taiwanese cell price to Chinese players are stable due to solid demand until Jun under the US antidumping investigation. Some Taiwanese cell companies cut price to non-Chinese buyers to secure future orders after Jun when the US antidumping ruling is expected to be announced. On the other hand, cell price in China faces increasing price cut pressure with the lack of downstream demand in the country. Therefore, overall solar cell pricing goes down this week.

Overall wafer price continues on the downtrend this week. Multi wafer pricing downtrend in China continues exerting price cut pressure on overall wafer price level. Since Chinese solar companies have high wafer inventory on hand, some 2nd tier wafer makers offer low prices to sell wafers for some cash. First tier Chinese wafer companies still intend to maintain stable pricing but face increasing price cut pressure. Non-Chinese wafer makers also aim to maintain their prices; however, price downtrend in China still impose price cut pressure. Mono wafer price also moderately drop this week under the mono cell pricing downtrend as some solar companies strategically cut their prices to gain market share in Japan and EU although demand remains solid.

Polysilicon price also moderately drop this week. With price cuts in the solar component supply chain, polysilicon demand and pricing is also negatively impacted. In China, some wafer companies lower production utilization and cut polysilicon procurement. With weaker demand and overall solar component pricing downtrend, polysilicon face increasing price cut pressure in the spot.
