Triodos Renewables breaks ground in Cambridgeshire

Construction at the Boardinghouse site of five turbines, which have a combined generation capacity of 10.25 MW, is expected to take 14 months with an anticipated operational launch in September 2015.

This week, Triodos Renewables has broken ground on its latest Cambridgeshire wind farm projects with full mobilisation of the construction phase. Following design completion, civil engineering works have kicked off with initial excavation and mobilisation activity at Boardinghouse and Floods Ferry Road sites, near March, following announcements of the deals in spring this year.

Construction at the Boardinghouse site of five turbines, which have a combined generation capacity of 10.25 MW, is expected to take 14 months with an anticipated operational launch in September 2015. Sited on farmland, the civil engineering is being delivered by established firm, R G Carter, who are also the contractors for Floods Ferry Road, starting with construction of access roads for the turbines. EcoGen, who are also part owners of the wind farm, along with Triodos Renewables and the local landowner, are managing the project. At its peak, 50 people will be employed on the contract directly and with local sub-contractors.

At Floods Ferry Road, the construction period is expected to be shorter with one turbine with generating capacity of 1.5MW to be installed and is likely to be operational by the end of 2014. The wind farm is located at brownfield site which belongs to Greenvale, the UK's leading supplier of potatoes. The turbine will provide enough energy to power Greenvale's potato processing facility. The remaining energy, around 40% of the total output, will be supplied to the local electricity network. Work on the site has begun speedily with construction of the piling platform for the driven precast concrete piles that will support the turbine foundation and is being project managed by Wind Prospect. The construction project is expected to employ around 25 people.

Commenting on this, Monika Paplaczyck, Investment Manager at Triodos Renewables, said, "With the project being acquired in February and March this year, we are really pleased with the swift mobilisation of construction activities. This means we are able to quicken the pace in which we can ultimately start generating renewable energy from these two sites in Cambridgeshire. As with all our projects, we have looked to resource our supply chain by employing local contractors and we are delighted to be working with R G Carter who are based in the area. By the end of next year, we will have invested in a combined energy generation output of 11.75 MW from Boardinghouse and Floods Ferry Road taking our Cambridgeshire total to 21.75MW."

In September this year, Triodos Renewables will be launching its next share offer for the public to invest in renewable energy via the company. Investors have the opportunity to join a growing community of over 5,000 Triodos Renewables shareholders. The company's shares have a delivered a steady financial return as well as enabling Triodos Renewables to build additional energy capacity for the UK.
