Turkish geothermal sector surging ahead in global rankings

The incredible growth of Turkey's geothermal sector will be featured at IGC Türkiye, the Congress in the Heart of the Geothermal Industry in Turkey, with partners Ormat and Exergy and an exciting EBRD workshop preceding the event.

Reykjavik, April 14, 2016 - Turkey has seen an incredible growth of geothermal power generation capacity from 30 MW in 2008 to currently 648 MW joining the Top 10 of geothermal countries in the world.

It is therefore not surprising that the country has attracted a lot of interest by the global geothermal energy community, not only as a market for products and services, but also as an example on how to stimulate geothermal project development.

The Menderes Graben, the geothermal hot spot of Turkey, will be the key focus of IGC Türkiye 2016, a new geothermal congress that will be taking place 6-8 June 2016 in Izmir, close to most of the geothermal power plants of Turkey.

Various Turkish and international experts will be presenting and discussing geothermal energy development in the region and beyond at this congress organized by ThinkGeoEnergy in collaboration with Enerchange. The congress is translated simultaneously.

Ormat Technologies Inc. is the Gigawatt and field trip sponsor for the event. Ormat is the only geothermal company with fully vertical integration capabilities and over 150 operating power plants world-wide. The company is the largest provider of geothermal power plant solutions in Turkey, with 22 units operating as of March 2016.

Ahead of the congress, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey will hold a workshop focusing on the opportunities and challenges of geothermal development in Turkey. This activity falls within the umbrella of the Banks Early Stage Private Sector Geothermal Development Framework (PLUTO) which combines technical assistance and climate finance to developers with policy and awareness raising initiatives to scale-up geothermal investments in the country.

Furthermore, there will be offered two technical workshops. In the evening the social evening event of the EXERGY Opening Lounge provides an excellent opportunity to mingle. EXERGY is the developer and manufacturer of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbines with the pioneering Radial Outflow Turbine technology, and is the first company with certified ‘Made in Turkey turbine and production, as well as supplier to numerous projects in Turkey.

The day after the Congress, a field trip to geothermal power plants in the region, organised by Ormat, will provide a great opportunity to experience first hand the achievement of Turkey's geothermal energy sector.
