California demand for wind power energizes transmission firms

Nichola Groom for Reuters:  A firm controlled by Philip Anschutz, the billionaire entertainment and pro sports magnate, will soon build the largest wind farm in the United States to serve utilities in California, where officials have set ambitious green power goals. The $5 billion project, however, will be constructed 700 miles away in Wyoming, a state better known for coal mines and oil fields. The vast distance between the two states provides a different Anschutz-owned firm with another big opportunity: a $3 billion project building transmission lines to deliver the power - one of a dozen similar power-line projects by other companies across the West. (Map: How wind power will get from Wyoming to California click here) In all, about 5,700 miles of transmission lines are in development with the goal of delivering renewable energy to California from other states, according to the Western Interstate Energy Board.   Cont'd...

What are the Advantages of Ultrasonic Wind Sensors?

Whether mechanical, ultrasonic or laser wind measurements: all measuring methods have technical limits. While for mechanical wind sensors the measuring element - cups and vanes - itself predominantly produces a disturbance in the flow field, for ultrasonic anemometers a disturbance can be caused by the sensor holder or housing construction. Only optical methods, e.g. LDA (Laser Doppler Anemometer), enable a disturbance-free measurement of wind speeds. However, for this particles are required and such devices are very expensive and difficult to maintain.

Fraunhofer TechBridge launches SunRISE Challenge II in partnership with DSM and Greentown Labs, seeking innovations in solar energy

For solar energy to reach grid parity and become cost competitive with fossil fuel-based generation on a global scale, it is necessary to reduce the LCOE of solar PV.

THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IS ON THE AGENDA AT EES EUROPE

The ees Europe Conference, which is being held on May 30 and 31, 2017, will accompany ees Europe for a third year, with this year's Conference Program highlighting a new area of interest: the automotive industry. The mobile storage system sector is booming, and several panel discussions are dedicated to topics such as automotive battery technology or vehicle-to-grid. Prof. Dr. Werner Tillmetz's selection as the conference's second chairman underscores the importance of this topic for the organizers.
