"European Wood Pellet & Chip Demand Boosted by Growth in Denmark & the UK."

European wood pellet prices have rebounded in the last six months after a prolonged and challenging period of bearish pricing for pellet producers. The market witnessed bankruptcy from well-established suppliers in Europe and North America as pellet prices drifted towards unsustainable levels for many in the industry. That outlook started to turn earlier this year with the arrival of stronger demand from Europe and Asia, coupled with lower pellet production output helping to push prices higher. European utilities and generators benefited from the cheap pricing but there was a mutual realization on both sides of the market that prices had to increase before the market lost more suppliers to bankruptcy.

Since the turn of the year delivered spot prices to Europe have firmed by over USD$40 per metric tonne to put the market on a firmer footing. Strong demand from Belgium, the UK and Denmark played a key role, coupled with the news that RWE and Uniper would require 3mn tonnes of pellets for the Netherlands, and Lynemouth and MGT are both progressing in the UK.

The ever-developing markets in Japan and South Korea have added to the positive sentiment, with a buoyant Korean spot market and lengthy list of new projects in Japan adding to global demand.

In the wood chip market, strong demand from Hofor and Dong Energy puts Scandinavia at the forefront of this evolving market with expectations of Danish demand for wood chips set to reach 2mn tonnes by 2019.

Industry News

Leading energy company in Europe - EPH (Energetický a průmyslový holding a.s.) has acquired the biomass power plants owned by Biomasse Italia and Biomasse Crotone (for a total capacity of 73 MW) from Bioenergie (50 percent) and Api Nòva Energia (50 percent).

With this acquisition, EPH has established itself as a key renewable energy company for solid biomass in Italy.

EPH that has headquarters in Prague, is planning to expand into European renewables market, and this new acquisition is part of its plan to increase market share.

EPH Group has already invested in the UK – where it acquired  Lynemouth, a 420MW coal plant in Northumberland, that is now being converted to fire biomass feedstock. Once completed, the plant will be one of the biggest biomass plants in the world.

“Biomass could be the best tool to meet the goal of coal phase-out foreseen by the new National Energy Strategy, as proven in the UK and Denmark,” said Marco Arcelli, EPH business development director.

More details about biomass projects in Europe will be shared at CMT’s 3rd Biomass Trade & Power Europe on 7-8 February 2018 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Veolia along with Móstoles Ecoenergía has recently inaugurated a 12.5 MW biomass district heating system in Spain. The biomass heating project has already got an investment of €7 million ($8.27 million) in the first phase.

In the initial phase of the project, heating is expected to be provided to about 3,000 homes with further plans to provide heating to an additional 4,000 homes by summer of 2018.

Already 4 kilometers of pipeline have been laid out for the project along with 13 exchange substations.

The heating plant comprise three Uniconfort biomass boilers of which two have an output of 5,000 kW, and one has a capacity of 2,000 kW.

The district heating plant in Spain will consume 5,934 metric tons of biomass annually. The wood chips feedstock is procured locally from land managed by Enerbosque Extremadura S.L.

The environment friendly plant is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by 9,000 metric tons annually, while reducing energy costs by 15 percent.

European biomass energy market is led by major projects in Denmark. Denmark’s Dong Energy is converting its 1057 MWe/502 MWth Asnaes district heating plant in the city of Kalundborg. The new plant is expected to come online in late 2019 – which will be its seventh coal-fired plant that it has converted to biomass.

The conversion of the Danish coal-fired combined heat and power plant to biomass is underway and Dong Energy signed a 20-year steam and district heating contract with utility Kalundborg Forsyning, pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk and biotech company Novozymes. The contract will help Dong carry out the conversion – with ultimate aim of phasing out coal-fired power by 2023. As per the contract the new plant will supply heat and process steam through the existing district heating network.

Dong Energy has contracted Valmet to deliver a 140 MWth biomass-fired power boiler plant as well as supply an automation system. Plus, Valmet will also provide flue gas treatment consisting of a baghouse filter, combustion air humidification, flue gas condensing, condensate treatment and a stack.

The new coal to biomass converted plant will help achieve an 800,000-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions per year at the Asnaes plant and will make Novo Nordisk’s largest production unit in Kalundborg carbon-neutral, reducing the company’s global carbon emissions by 45 per cent.

Dong said the wood chip fuel will come primarily from forestry by-products such as branches, twigs and thinning trees, and suppliers will be required to ensure that the wood chips come from sustainable forestry.
