XsunX Plans to Seek Green Building Certification
Power Glass May Help Produce a New Generation of High Performance Buildings
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., April 26, 2005 - XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX), developer of Power Glass(TM) -- an innovative solar technology that allows glass windows to produce electricity from the power of the sun, announced today that the Company plans to seek certification for the use of Power Glass(TM) in green building design and construction.
The U.S. Green Building Council has established LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) which is a series of building standards for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED consists of 69 criteria in 6 categories ranging from energy use and emissions to water use, material and resource use, and the sustainability of the building site. A focus of the LEED standards is the efficiency of building energy use which averages 30% less in LEED certified buildings.
XsunX believes that one of the more promising renewable energy technologies for green building integration may be Power Glass(TM). XsunX Power Glass(TM) provides an efficient means of producing electricity on site, directly from the sun, without concern for energy supply or environmental harm, in the form of the building's vision glass.
With Power Glass(TM) as an integral part of a building's vision glass, these surfaces can be used to create electricity. This electricity in turn can flow through power conversion equipment and into the building's electrical distribution system, thereby feeding electricity to the building's electrical loads. In essence, the skin of the building produces electricity for the building increasing overall building efficiencies.
The growth in demand for green building design is having a bandwagon effect on the number of architects, builders, and investors who have come to understand that it is no longer the goal of good design to simply create a building that is aesthetically pleasing. They realize that buildings must become environmentally responsive as well. Many have responded by specifying higher-efficiency lighting, thermally efficient glazing, and increased use of recycled building materials, gray water treatment, and the use of on-site renewable power generation.
The cost impacts to implement many LEED certification ratings are typically minimal ranging from as little as 2.5% to 4% of construction budgets. The overall low costs for LEED implementation and the resulting benefits in reduced operating costs are spawning a massive growth in projects seeking LEED-certification. The pending number of projects seeking LEED certification represents a 12-fold increase over the total current number of U.S-based LEED certified buildings.
In California, the Environmental Protection Agency's new 25-story headquarters building in Sacramento, which became the first high-rise building to earn the Platinum LEED rating, the highest possible rating, is anticipated to save the agency roughly $1 million per year through lower operating costs.
About XsunX
Based in Aliso Viejo, California, XsunX is the developer of Power Glass -- an innovative solar technology that allows glass windows to produce electricity from the power of the sun. This proprietary process is intended to allow manufacturers to apply a transparent and photovoltaic glazing to glass and other transparent substrates. When XsunX glazing is exposed to light, the light energy is converted into electrical energy for use as a power source. XsunX believes that its solar electric glazing technology has a number of major market opportunities in the worldwide architectural glass, optical film and plastics markets.
