US: Corn Isn't Enough for Ethanol Production in Future

The US is looking for alternatives to corn for Ethanol production in future. Plant cellulose seems to be the best alternative the State is willing to go for at present.

Ethanol if obtained through cellulose, a material found in cornstalks, trees, and grass that doesn't carry any agricultural value, can help reduce corn's demand and also curb the appetite of US for more and more foreign crude oil.

Ethanol, produced from the cellulose of plants, has chemical properties that are same as in Ethanol obtained through sugar cane or corn. However, Ethanol can be made from various non-edible materials such as switchgrass, sawdust, and cereal straw.

Corn based Ethanol emits approximately 20% less CO2 and other heat trapping gases than gasoline. However using Ethanol obtained through cellulose will reduce this emission by around 90%, as per an analysis of the University of California at Berkeley.

Corn is the most used feedstock in Ethanol production in US. Cereal prices have shown a sharp rise during the past few months, with the burgeoning Ethanol plants that use corn for Ethanol production. Owing to this, small players such as Broin Cos. and BlueFire Ethanol Inc have joined forces with the bigger names such as DuPont Co, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, and Waste Management Inc. The firms have come together so as to develop the technology needed for making cellulosic Ethanol a workable option.

As per energy experts, cellulosic Ethanol may help control the sky rocketing demand for corn. It will also result in freeing up more land to be used for agriculture or for other work.
