St. Louis, July 7, 2008…St. Louis-based Vertegy has been tapped to lend its award-winning design and consulting services to the sustainable design and construction of the Benedictine Women of Madison, a monastery located in Middleton, Wis. The development is expected to earn LEED Platinum certification upon completion.

Vertegy will be assisting project manager Hoffman, LLC to design the sustainable two-story facility. The new building, which will replace the existing Holy Wisdom Monastery, will include a chapel that features gathering and dining space for 300 people, a kitchen, offices for the Benedictine Life Foundation, a library and archives, and offices for liturgy, pastoral and prioress.

Some of the sustainable elements of the facility will include a highly energy efficient design and zero water discharge, and the team will also explore photovoltaic technology, wind power and adaptive design. Future expansion of the renewable energy systems, including an extensive array of solar panels, are expected to lead to a "net zero" energy site. The neighboring fields will be restored to native prairie, which will assist with the prevention of storm water run-off. Through these concepts and a very small environmental footprint, the project team hopes to achieve a LEED Platinum certification after the monastery is completed in December 2009.

Vertegy's other LEED Platinum buildings include the St. Louis region's first two LEED Platinum commercial facilities. The William Kerr Foundation Building is located in St. Louis City and the Alberici Headquarters building is in North St. Louis County.

Founded in February 2005, Vertegy provides clients with design, procurement and construction consulting services for green and sustainable facilities. One of the key ways Vertegy serves clients is by helping them gain certification for their projects from various nationally and internationally recognized certification bodies, such as the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which provides LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification. Vertegy — which is derived from combining the Latin root for green and strategy — is based in St. Louis at the LEED Platinum Alberici Corporate Headquarters.
