INDUSTRIAL and commercial equipment supplier, Slingsby, has beaten off fierce competition to win Business in the Community's (BITC) Yorkshire and Humber Carbon Reduction Award in recognition of its environmental commitment.

The Shipley based company, which has more than 120 employees, won the award after significantly reducing its carbon footprint by introducing new energy saving measures and waste management initiatives throughout the organisation. The runners-up included Communisis UK Ltd, Leeds Metropolitan University, Northern Foods and Yorkshire Bank.

Dominic Slingsby, Managing Director of Slingsby explains: "Reducing our carbon footprint and making all our operations as efficient as possible makes business sense and we are delighted to have our efforts recognised by winning this prestigious award. When we moved premises in 2006 we invested heavily in a wide range of environmental improvements including new insulation throughout our premises, de-stratification fans that recirculate high level warm air, aluminium framed double glazed window units and we even reshaped trees that were blocking natural light.

"In addition we have created recycling centres in all office, production and warehouse areas and installed two compactors that reduce the number of skips we need for waste and enable us to recycle approximately five tonnes of plastic each year instead of sending it to landfill."

Elizabeth Edgington of BITC said: "Slingsby thoroughly deserves to win this award for implementing such a successful environmental improvement programme and the way that everyone in the company has embraced it is testament to the company's forward thinking ethos."

In another major coup, Slingsby has also been awarded a 'Certificate of Significant Improvement' by BITC for the company's entry into the Yorkshire & Humber Environment Index 2009, which benchmarks organisations against their peers based on their environmental impact.
