Missouri Farmer Chooses Corvus Energy's Batteries to Create 100% Eco-Powered Pork-Processing Plant

Sustainable farmer Russ Kremer chooses Corvus' lithium-ion battery technology, scalable to megawatt sizes, to store energy for his off-grid farm and pork-processing plant

Richmond, B.C. (November 2, 2010) — Russ Kremer, a fifth-generation Missouri hog farmer and leader of a coalition of 52 family farmers, is in the midst of creating the United States' first 100 percent eco-powered, zero-waste pork processing plant.

The plant will process Heritage Acre Foods' all-natural pork, capture and reprocess the farm's waste, rather than dumping it, and will have a bio-diesel plant to make its own fuel to run its generators.

Kremer will also use wind and solar generators to capture the power the plant needs. Corvus Energy's revolutionary 400-500 kWh battery pack will store the energy created by bio-diesel, wind and solar and disperse it on an as needed basis.

"Without Corvus Energy's battery pack, our plan would be nothing. This is the only battery pack capable of storing wind, solar and bio-diesel energies and dispersing it on an as needed basis," Kremer said. "We hope to have the Corvus batteries in place within the second quarter of 2011 and the plant fully operational within two years."

This is not the first time that Kremer's taken on such a lofty endeavor. In 1989 Kremer was almost killed by a bacterial infection that had been passed to him from one of his own boars. He had routinely fed his animals commercial feed and had inadvertently been helping to incubate the antibiotic-resistant strep that almost killed him. In 1989, Kremer decided to start over from square one.

Kremer destroyed his Confined Animal Feeding Operations-approved barns and exterminated his herd in order to raise brand-new, hormone-free piglets on his pastures. He traded in their food, composed predominantly of antibiotics and animal byproducts, for one made with soy, corn and oats. It was a risky, expensive decision, one that forced him to cash out his retirement account and forgo health insurance.

But it turned out to be a success. In 2001, he and 33 other farmers banded together to create an all-natural, hormone-free Ozark Mountain Pork Cooperative and, later on, Heritage Acre Foods. Since then, the self-described sustainable agriculture evangelist has worked beside everyone from prestigious NYC-based chefs to the likes of President Barack Obama. He's taught Alaskan farmers the benefits of cooperative farming and is considered to be a prophet-like visionary within the agricultural industry.

The pork processing plant is the logical next step, Kremer said. The farmers are hell bent on ensuring that their entire manufacturing chain is as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible.

"We're helping revolutionize farming by providing family farms with the capability to capture consistent, green energy," said Brent Perry, president and chief executive officer for Corvus. "This is the first time that truly effective portable and remote energy storage has been created for a farm and pork-processing plant. Our battery is 99 percent efficient, a full 10 to 30 percent better than any other brand, and they last more than 20 years."
