WICHITA, Kan. - Clinic In A Can, a medical nonprofit, recently completed the first fully solar powered medical clinic constructed in a shipping container.

The container clinic, called a Clinic In A Can, is a shipping container that is transformed into a self-sustaining, fully functioning medical clinic with two exam rooms, a laboratory, and a mechanical room.

Clinic In A Can pioneered the ability to use solar power energy as the primary energy source for medical clinics made in shipping containers. The solar panels convert direct sunlight to power the three-room clinic each with air conditioning, lighting, and medical equipment. On overcast days, the fully solar-charged batteries will power the entire clinic for 24 hours.

"The greatest need for medical facilities is in remote areas. However, remote areas often have limited or no access to electrical power. With this fact in mind, we are pleased to be the first to provide an accessible health centers built in a shipping container that is powered by solar energy," said Clinic In A Can CEO Michael Wawrzewski. "The solar powered Clinic In A Can is a practical and innovative solution to not only the immediate healthcare needs but also the long-term healthcare needs that communities face."

This container clinic is the first solar powered clinic, but is Clinic In A Can's 11th clinic converted from 40 - foot shipping containers. The first Clinic In A Can was sent in 2005 to Jefferson parish in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and later sent to Haiti. Another six Clinic In A Cans have been sent to Haiti since the 2010 earthquake and three have been sent South Sudan.

The public and media are invited to tour the solar powered Clinic In A Can at 3545 N. Santa Fe in Wichita, Kan. For questions or more information contact the Hospitals of Hope office at 316-262-0953 or visit www.clinicinacan.org
