Siemens receives 270-MW wind power order in Canada

Will generate enough energy for up to 100,000 Canadian homes

Siemens Energy has been awarded an order from Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. (Samsung) and Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern) to supply and install 124 wind turbines for the South Kent wind project in Canada. The 270-MW project, located in Southwestern Ontario, will generate enough energy for up to 100,000 Canadian homes. The SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines to be used have a power rating of 2.3 megawatts (MW) each and a rotor diameter of 101 meters. Installation of the wind turbines at the South Kent project is scheduled to begin this year, with the start of operations expected for spring 2014.

"This order reinforces our commitment to our North American factories and our trust in the mid-term stabilization of these markets. We are proud to contribute to the development of wind power in Canada with our technology," said Felix Ferlemann, CEO of the Wind Power Division of Siemens Energy. Nacelles for this project will be assembled at the Siemens U.S. facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. Blades for the wind turbines will be manufactured at the company's Tillsonburg blade facility in Ontario, Canada.

According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, Canada is the ninth largest producer of wind energy in the world with a current installed capacity of roughly 5,600 MW. Siemens holds a leading position in the Ontario wind market.

Wind Power is part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2012, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about €33 billion, making Siemens one of the world's largest suppliers of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 330 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.
