SUNCybernetics hosts solar PV training

The one-day course introduced delegates to PV solar

The recently launched SUNCybernetics hosted its first solar photovoltaic (PV) training session at the North West University (NWU) campus' Solar Training Centre of South Africa. A total of 60 delegates had the opportunity to learn from the recently completed installations at the NWU.

The one-day course introduced delegates to PV solar by using a generic training module and the NWU's PV installation as the practical example to showcase the preparation, planning, project execution, installation techniques and commissioning of PV-plant installations on different roof areas.

The NWU installation consists of a 5 x 3kW grid-tied system that feeds directly into the engineering faculty's grid. In addition, a 1 x 3kW island system was installed close to the main entrance of the faculty with the main purpose of charging three electric scooters and an electric bicycle used as transport on the campus.

The PV training course also covered the possibilities of PV technology and using solar radiation as an energy source whilst addressing the various technical considerations like fuse choices, overvoltage and EMF-protection, monitoring, metering, the electrical circuits as well as troubleshooting PV-plants. Delegates were equipped with a good understanding of the basic functionality of PV systems and the different types of applications and their potential for South Africa and the world.

More advanced training modules are scheduled to run in 2014 and information about the training sessions will be published on the website www.suncy.com in the New Year.

SUNCybernetics is a joint partnership formed between South African energy engineering company, Energy Cybernetics and SUNfarming in Germany. SUNCybernetics is a small, medium and large scale solar PV solution provider and utilises the Solar Training Centre of South Africa's offerings to keep the market informed and educated on the possibilities of the PV market.

Dynapower - MAXIMIZE PRODUCTION AND REVENUES WITH SOLAR PLUS STORAGE

The addition of energy storage to an existing or new utility-scale PV installation allows system owners and operators the opportunity to capture additional revenues. Traditional storage plus solar applications have involved the coupling of independent storage and PV inverters at an AC bus or the use of multi-input hybrid inverters. An alternative approach - coupling energy storage to PV arrays with a DC-to-DC converter - can help maximize production and profits for existing and new utility-scale installations. DC-Coupled Utility-Scale Solar Plus Storage leads to higher round-trip efficiencies and lower cost of integration with existing PV arrays and at the same time, opens up new revenue streams not possible with traditional AC-coupled storage, including clipping recapture and low voltage harvesting, while being eligible for valuable tax incentives.
