TÜV SÜD at EWEA Offshore 2013: Improved safety and profitability for offshore wind farms

At EWEA Offshore 2013 in Germany, TÜV SÜD will showcase its full portfolio of offshore wind power services, supporting designers, owners/operators and manufacturers of wind turbines offering comprehensive and customised testing, certification and inspection services (Hall 3.1, Stand 31C50).

Offshore wind power is expanding throughout the world. "Apart from some restrictions owing to the difficult environment, this also applies to Germany", says Alexander Heitmann, Department Manager Offshore Wind Power at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH in Hamburg. "There, we focus our services increasingly on turbines that are being installed or have already been placed in service." According to the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie, BSH), more than 1,500 wind turbines with a capacity of 7,000 to 8,000 megawatts are to feed electricity into the grid by 2020.

Time management, supply chains, quality assurance and risk management are key factors of success in the realisation of complex offshore projects. "To keep an eye on all these factors, project owners need an interdisciplinary and diversified partner with the capacity to support projects of this size", explains Alexander Heitmann. TÜV SÜD offers a comprehensive range of services that can be customised to the individual requirements of its clients. The services of its offshore experts range from the certification of entire offshore projects, quality assurance during production and installation and the inspection and final approval of components to the testing of marine lifting equipment and periodic inspection of the wind turbines during operation. "With our clear focus on offshore wind power, we support designers, owners/operators and manufacturers in reaching their goal of safe and reliable operation of individual wind power turbines and complete wind farms, thus making an essential contribution to the profitability of the plants and the security of investments", emphasises Heitmann.

By the acquisition of PMSS in 2012, TÜV SÜD significantly extended its service portfolio for on- and offshore wind power and other renewable energy technologies. TÜV SÜD PMSS is a global consulting firm and a trusted advisor to some of the world's leading renewable power businesses and institutions, providing products, services and insights to private, public and independent sector organisations.

For offshore wind projects, PMSS experts draw upon experience developed over nearly 50GW of client projects over nearly two decades of engagements. The PMSS global team helps clients in areas including development strategy, due diligence, environment and permitting, safety and risk management and engineering and construction. "In today's growing offshore wind sector, project requirements are extending deeper than ever before, with clients needing sector specific experts across a global network to help navigate complex project gateways on capital intense projects", said Alan Chivers, Divisional Director of TÜV SÜD PMSS. "The combined strength of TÜV SÜD and PMSS enables us to provide the tools, resources and expertise to improve operations across all project phases."

Since the early 90's, TÜV SÜD PMSS has delivered offshore wind projects across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America for governments, project developers, OEMs, utilities, banks, institutional investors, insurers and other stakeholders.
