Italy is the sixth largest producer of wind power in the world with an approximated installed capacity of 8144 MW in 2012. In 2010, the energy produced by the 487 active plants accounted for almost 19% of the renewable energy produced in that year.

The European Commission issued its Directive on Electricity Production from Renewable Energy Sources in the year 2001, according to which 25% of Italy's electricity is to be obtained from renewables by the year 2010.
