Successful completion of 3 MWp solar power plant in Antigua

PV Energy finalized clean energy installation at V.C. Bird International Airport

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda (GOAB), together with the UK-based clean energy provider PV Energy Ltd., has lately turned a new page in Caribbean history through the completed installation of a solar energy generation and storage sun2live solution as a partial substitute for fossil fuels in Antiguan electric power generation.

The commissioning of the first project - with a total capacity of 3 MWp, installed on the southwest shoulder of the V.C. Bird International Airport of Antigua - started today. This substantial sun2live solar plant construction generates up to 4.645 MWh per year and therefore saves during the same period 3.019,50 tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to the efforts of GOAB towards addressing the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

The entire installation, comprising of more than 12.000 ground-mounted polycrystalline photovoltaic panels covering an area of 3.86 ha, has been completed within only three months. This first MWp-sized PV park is part of a total capacity of 10 MWp in solar installations that have been agreed in-between GOAB and PV Energy. The remaining 7 MWp will be installed on roofs of public buildings but also in the shape of additional ground-mounted parks.

This large-scale installation plays a pivotal role in the local governments energy management, as the generated power almost entirely covers the electricity consumption of the whole airport. The PV installation at the V.C. Bird International Airport has also been structurally combined with meecos energy management and storage system sun2safe. This all-in-one converter/inverter/storage provides backup power to the solar installations safety and monitoring system during night-time to bridge interruptions of the grid, enabling an optimal management and energy efficiency of the airport .

The transition to a green energy future is now well underway on the twin-island. Through the realization of this notable project, PV Energy Ltd. in association with The meeco Group helps to reduce the Caribbean nations reliance on non-renewable energy sources and mitigates the climate change issue by improving environmental quality.

About PV Energy Ltd.: PV Energy Ltd. was founded in 2010 and formed by the London-based property investor Peter Virdee and clean-energy provider The meeco Group.
