Solar Stock Update - July 31/09 - Dow's best month since Oct. '02
The Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded its best month in nearly seven years, posting an 882-point boost since Friday, July 3. In fact it was the best July for Wall Street in twenty years. Gains for the week for the Dow and NASDAQ were meager however, with both gaining less than a percent. The 20SSI decreased 5.8% from last week's close but the net gain since July 3 was nearly 22 points.
Solar-Powered Compactors Put the Squeeze on Trash Collection Costs
On April 30, 2009, Mayor Michael Nutter unveiled the first of 500 BigBelly solar-powered trash compactors and 210 companion single-stream recycling units to be installed throughout Center City Philadelphia. The solar compactors save time, money and fuel by reducing demand for collection trips. The compactors are also smart trash receptacles: each unit sends a wireless signal to alert staff when it is full, so managers can optimize collection routes in real time based on data from every machine in the field.

Much is made these days of attaching the word œgreen to products and/or buildings as a means of promoting a product or building in the market place even though the greenness or sustainability may be tenuous at best. I believe it is timely to make clear and to discriminate as to just exactly what do we really mean when we refer to a building as being green as well what kind of green are we referring to. We are all not talking about the same green therefore I wish to examine what I see as the main categories of œgreen.

This unfortunate position is short-sighted, and could prove disastrous. Abandoning these programs now will drive technology and innovation overseas and obstruct private investment. It will also waste state and federal dollars, stifle a burgeoning industry and limit options to fight climate change.
LOW ROLLING RESISTANCE TIRES
Only about 12 to 20 percent of the energy produced by the engine actually turns the wheels, and about one-third of that is consumed by rolling resistance. As you drive down the road, your tires squirm and deform every time you go around a corner, accelerate, or apply the brakes. The repeated tire deformation between the tire and the road, within the tire and between the tire and the rim, causes mechanical energy to be converted to heat; hence additional mechanical energy must be supplied to drive the axle.
