Record-breaking solar panel converts more than a quarter of sunlight into electricity

Ian Johnson for Independent: A record-breaking solar panel that can convert more than a quarter of the sunlight it receives into electricity has been developed by researchers in Japan.

Tracking the Sun - A Growing Opportunity

Tracking is still relatively young -- the majority of deployments have really been in just the past few years -- but it's growing up fast.

Automation in the Energy Industry

Automation should be the prologue to a discussion whenever a new process is introduced, not a postscript. This fundamental shift in thinking is critical to maximize any automation strategy.

The Economics of Small Commercial Solar Projects

Solar projects can be a great investment for many businesses and offer a solid ROI, but it takes time and energy to put together a project that works for all the interested parties-the customer, the bank, and the installer.

The Atacama Desert, Extreme Conditions for Instrumentation

Due to extreme weather, high solar radiation, high UV index and the salinity of certain areas, the Atacama Desert in Chile presents conditions that contribute to the early degradation of instrumentation, communication and energy systems.

What Is Net Metering, and How Does It Work?

Depending on the size of your solar system and the amount of solar you produce each month, you can greatly reduce your monthly electric bills, and even profit from it.

Sollega Case Study: FastRack510 - IKEA 1.125 MW

Ikea, one of the leading retailers of finished goods in the world, has installed a 1.125 MW solar array on their new facility in Renton Washington. It is the latest Ikea in the US to be powered by the sun and the largest roof top install in Washington State.

Venteea Project Shows a Fair Wind for Distribution Network Energy Storage

In addition to the technical lessons learned, the project team expects to draw conclusions regarding the changes necessary to the current regulatory regime that will enable the optimum usage of energy storage in unbundled power systems.

Innovative tidal technology gets $4.6 million funding

Anmar Frangoul for CNBC:  The European Commission has awarded 4.4 million euros ($4.63 million) in funding to a European tidal energy consortium to demonstrate innovative technology for tidal turbines. The consortium, led by Scotland's Nova Innovation, will use the funding to demo and show a "direct drive power take-off (PTO) solution" for tidal turbines. According to Nova Innovation, this technology could help to cut the lifetime cost of tidal power by 20 percent. The project will be known as TiPA (standing for Tidal turbine Power take-off Accelerator) and run for 36 months. Organizations involved in the project include Siemens, the University of Edinburgh, and Delft Technical University, among others.   Cont'd...

A World Premiere - The First Hybrid FPV and Hydroelectric Dam Power Plant System

The installed 840 floating PV panels have a total peak capacity of 220 kilowatts and is expected to generate 332 megawatts per hour in its first year - equivalent to the annual consumption of around 100 homes.

Southern California Edison Reaches California's Solar Deadline

Under net metering 2.0, property owners are forced to pay non-bypassable charges, reducing the value of clean energy provided to the utility.

New Energy Storage Product - MicroStorage

Phazr is a small battery pack that pairs with a single solar panel forming a highly scalable solar plus energy storage system.

New hydronium-ion battery presents opportunity for more sustainable energy storage

The new battery provides an additional option for researchers, particularly in the area of stationary storage.

Renewable Energy And The EU: Are We Better Off After Brexit?

Scientists invented a battery that could work for a decade without degrading

Mike Wehner for BGR:  Energy storage degradation in rechargeable batteries is a pretty serious problem that many of us put up with on a regular basis. It’s why your iPhone seems to last forever when it’s brand new out of the box but seems like it dies by lunchtime after a couple of years of use. Now, researchers at Harvard have developed a new battery technology using a bit of chemistry magic to create a rechargeable power source that could be tapped for many years with very little in the way of maintenance.
