(February 4, 2016) The American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC/MN) named HR Greens CB&I Landfill Gas to Energy Facility project its 2016 Engineering Excellence Grand Award winner at its banquet Jan. 29.

This 49th annual competition recognizes engineering achievements that exhibit the highest degree of merit and ingenuity. Entries were judged on the basis of originality and innovation; future value to the engineering profession; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; complexity; and meeting the clients needs.

HR Green is the design builder for the CB&I Progressive Waste Landfill Gas to Energy facility in St. Cloud, Florida. The CB&I project epitomizes beneficial reuse of an otherwise underutilized waste product - landfill gas. The facility utilizes up to 6,000 scfm per day of landfill gas from decaying garbage, which would otherwise be wasted by destroying/burning off in a flare.

"CB&I wanted a single point responsibility turn-key delivery process provider, in which a single firm was responsible for providing all engineering, procurement and construction and commissioning services," said Doug Tholo, President of HR Greens Energy Business line. "HR Green was able to respond totally by developing a delivery approach typically reserved for extremely large utility power projects in the hundreds of millions dollar range."

HR Green provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services which included design, equipment selection/acquisition and general contracting for construction. In addition, HR Green led the team to commission and test the facility prior to exporting electrical power to the grid. The electrical energy will be transmitted and sold to Orlando Utility Commission (OUC) through an 18 mile power line to OUCs closest substation near St. Cloud. The 9.6 MW facility generates enough electrical energy to power nearly 10,000 homes within OUCs service area.

Originally founded in 1913, HR Green has offices throughout the United States. HR Green provides engineering and technical and management services to clients in the following markets: Transportation, Water, Governmental Services, Energy, and Land Development.
