SPI Q&A with | Tigo Energy

Tell us about your company.

Tigo® is a global company founded in Silicon Valley in 2007 that combines a unique systems-level approach with expertise in semiconductors, power electronics, and solar energy. By partnering with tier 1 module and inverter manufacturers in the industry, Tigo is able to provide innovation to cost-effective multivendor PV systems with integrated and retrofitted Flex MLPE as well as communications technology to drive the cost of solar electricity down. After years of research, development, testing, and certification, Tigo brought the revolutionary TS4 Platform to market. Tigo’s modular TS4 Platform can be selectively deployed with different functionalities per module at different price points utilizing Predictive IV (PIV) technology to maximize energy harvest at a minimal cost. Tigo offers PV installers, designers, OEMs, EPCs, and system owners the solution that improves return on investment at each level to reduce the O&M cost over the lifetime of any project. Today, Tigo remains the only UL-certified, multivendor MLPE rapid shutdown for residential and C&I.  Tigo has operations in the USA, Central & South America, Caribbean, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, South Pacific, and the Middle East. Your company will be exhibiting at SPI & ESI 2019, what is it that makes this an important event for your company?

SPI is the largest annual event that Tigo partakes in within North America. With the USA’s NEC 690.12 rapid shutdown requirements impending deadlines in each state, we focus on providing our customers and partners with the most cost-effective solutions they need to comply. This event is a great place to connect with installers, distributors, OEMs, EPCs, designers, system owners, analysts, media, and more to introduce new Flex MLPE and educate them on the benefits of Tigo’s selectively deployable, plug-n-play, and customizable PV system designs.

What makes your booth a must visit for SPI & ESI 2019 Attendees?

This year, Tigo will display the new TS4-A (Advanced Retrofit/Add-on) series including the new product launch of the TS4-A-2F (Fire Safety for 2 Modules) at SPI. Tigo’s Training and Sales Team will be at the booth to walk you through what a PV system with Tigo looks like, the many capabilities we offer for any project need, and the value of these new cost-effective TS4 units. Visit us at Booth #5347!

SPI 2019 has different sections in the Exhibition Hall this year. Tell us about your Booth in the Smart Energy section.

Tigo’s Booth #5347 in the Smart Energy section of SPI will showcase our smart modular solutions including an integrated solar panel with our TS4 & new TS4-A units. We’ll also be showing module-level monitoring with Tigo’s SMART Website & App for the most reliable visibility into solar assets. The week of September 23rd marks the North America Smart Energy Week honoring all the solar technologies that use data to drive better decisions, processes, and solutions for more efficient and cost-effective renewable energy. This ethos is synonymous with Tigo’s mission and what we see most in demand by our customers.

When you get a chance to walk the exhibit hall floor yourself, what is it you will be most interested to see?  Any educational sessions, pavilions etc. you plan on attending?

Tigo is one of the only UL-certified, multivendor MLPE providers, so we are most excited to visit our inverter and smart module partners who are displaying compatible Tigo products. The UL-listed inverters with Tigo’s rapid shutdown solution showing at SPI include CPS (Booth 2201), Fronius (Booth 2019), GoodWe (Booth 2609), SolaX Power (Booth 719), Yaskawa Solectria Solar (Booth 2125), and more. The smart module manufacturers integrated with Tigo showing at SPI include GCL (Booth 1001), JA Solar (Booth 1219), Phono Solar (Booth 301), Suntech (Booth 211), and more. We encourage SPI attendees to ask each provider about these solutions’ pricing, availability, and shipping times.

The solar industry is undertaking rapid advancements and growth for safer solar. Give us an idea on how your company and product is being utilized now for safe solar.

This year, Tigo will be featuring multiple UL-certified rapid shutdown solutions compliant with NEC 2017. The most cost-effective version is the TS4-F (Fire Safety) available as an integrated module shipped from the manufacturer as well as a retrofitted/add-on unit for either 1 modules (TS4-A-F) or 2 modules (TS4-A-2F). The monitored version for full visibility is the TS4 integrated module shipped from the manufacturer as well as a retrofitted/add-on unit for either 1 modules or 2 modules with TS4-S (Safety), TS4-O (Optimization), and TS4-L (Long Strings). Each safety option is customizable according to the featured needed on site and the state or country requirements. Tigo continues to be the only UL-certified multivendor MLPE solution for rapid shutdown for both residential and C&I.

Give us your thoughts on what the future holds for customized PV design.

Tigo’s Flex MLPE is designed to be interchangeable, upgradable, and selectively deployable according to customers’ budget needs and PV system characteristics. Whether it’s monitoring, safety, optimization, or longer string designs – you can chose what you pay for. We think that customizable PV designs has not only been a consistent demand in the past for system owners but also a huge factor in the future success of the solar industry. As manufacturers and models of modules and inverters grow exponentially, Tigo customers will benefit from having a multivendor solution instead of being stuck with 1 inverter type or paying for optimization they don’t want.
