HARVESTER' MOBILE WATER PURIFIER FEATURED AT NEW YORK CITY MEDIA EVENT
New York City - February 24, 2004 - SolarOne''s Harvester' Mobile Water Purifier will be featured on Thursday, February 26, 2004 at a New York City event with international entrepreneur, David Robinson (son of baseball great, Jackie Robinson) and NY business leaders. The event will launch 1st Rochdale Cooperative's "One Village at a Time" program with the world's first portable, solar-powered water purification system as a centerpiece. The event will be held at 10 a.m. at 1st Rochdale's Headquarters, 465 Grand St. in Manhattan.
The Harvester Water Purifier (www.SolarOne.net) will provide clean, safe drinking water to East African villagers whose only alternative has been a two-mile round-trip trek to haul contaminated river water back to their villages. The villagers in the southern highlands of Tanzania who will operate the system and develop entrepreneurial micro-enterprises from the sale of clean water also operate an established coffee cooperative that grows and exports gourmet coffee.
"We are delighted to have teamed up with David Robinson on his mission to bring solar power to Tanzanian village. This project is in line with our company mission of harvesting sunshine to create a healthier, wealthier and wiser planet," stated Moneer Azzam, President of SolarOne'.
Robinson, founder of Sweet Unity Farms (www.SweetUnityFarms.com), a cooperative of 500 families in the southern Tanzanian highlands that produces premium gourmet coffee for direct trade to the global marketplace, assures that the local farmer-owners reap as much of the profit from the ultimate retail value of their coffee as possible. The Sweet Unity Farms example also sets a model for other villages and market towns throughout East Africa and elsewhere.
Through Robinson's complimentary Tanzania Power & Light initiative, the coffee growers can also purchase solar energy systems to provide electric power to household, commercial, and village institutions. New York's 1st Rochdale Cooperative Group, Ltd. (www.1stRochdaleNYC.coop) - through its Green AppleTM energy efficiency initiative - is helping develop strategies and solutions for Tanzania Power & Light.
