20+ Countries, $5.6 Billion In Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Activity Today, Says PATH

Report by international hydrogen association details current hydrogen and fuel cell activity and predicts significant growth by the next decade

Hydrogen and fuel cell activity is currently active in over twenty countries and accounts for an industry worth at least $5.6 billion, according to a report released by the Partnership for Advancing the Transition to Hydrogen (PATH). Today's hydrogen and fuel cell industries also account for 40,000 jobs worldwide. The global market for hydrogen and fuel cells is poised for significant growth, as up to $38 billion in global revenue and 700,000 jobs are projected for the industry by the end of this decade.

PATH, an international coalition of hydrogen associations, examined hydrogen and fuel cell activity in its report for each of the twenty countries that form the Partnership. The Annual Report on World Progress in Hydrogen Energy is "the first report of its kind that captures country-by-country hydrogen energy activity on a global scale", said PATH Chairman Terry Kimmel. "It will have immense value to investors, technology developers, government policy makers and our PATH members. It will serve as a benchmark document for future updates that measure the continuing transition to the hydrogen age."

Among other findings, the report concluded that both developed and developing countries are actively transitioning to using fuel cells and hydrogen. Developed countries have implemented hydrogen and fuel cell technology mostly as a way to diminish their reliance on fossil fuel imports for transportation, stationary and portable power. Developing countries, on the other hand, are turning to hydrogen and fuel cells as a source of clean, quiet and reliable power, which in turn can grow GDP and allow for economic growth.

The Annual Report on World Progress in Hydrogen Energy is sponsored and endorsed by the International Association for Hydrogen Energy (IAHE). From IAHE President Nejat Veziroglu's endorsement message: "We think a yearly publication of an Annual Report on World Progress in Hydrogen will be very useful for the Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells industries, as well as for engineers and scientists working on Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells."

PATH is an international coalition of hydrogen and fuel cell associations and organizations established in 2002 to facilitate the implementation of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Today, 20 associations and partnering organizations across all 6 inhabited continents belong to PATH, representing 79% of the world's GDP, 40% of the global population and a clear majority of the world's interest in hydrogen and fuel cells.
