Explosive Growth in Japan and China to Drive Annual Solar Photovoltaic Demand Above 35 Gigawatts, According to NPD Solarbuzz

Strong risk to solar PV supply-chain at year-end if Japan and China project pipelines fail to materialize.

Santa Clara, CA July 03, 2013

During the second half of 2013, global solar photovoltaic (PV) demand is forecast to reach 20 gigawatts (GW), up 22% Y/Y. This increase, driven largely by aggressive PV development in China and Japan, will drive full year 2013 PV demand to a record high of 35.1 GW, according to the new NPD Solarbuzz Quarterly report.

"The solar PV industry continues to transition from a European-dominated environment to a global market, with a wide range of countries contributing to growth in the overall PV market," said Michael Barker, Senior Analyst at NPD Solarbuzz. "Until this transition phase is completed, however, the PV industry remains highly dependent on a small group of countries currently at the multi-GW level."

Global PV demand during 1H'13 reached 15 GW, up 9% compared to the same period in 2012. More than 60% of 1H'13 demand came from four countries: Germany, China, Japan, and the US. Global PV installations were led by large-scale utility and commercial ground-mount applications, which provided 45% of first-half PV demand. Residential rooftop applications accounted for approximately 20%, with the remainder coming from non-residential rooftop installations and off-grid applications.

During 2H'13, PV deployment from just two countriesóChina and Japanóis forecast to account for more than 45% of global PV demand. While the European region accounted for almost half of global PV demand during 2H'12, this figure will decline to less than 30% during 2H'13.

"Just three years ago, solar PV installations in China and Japan were contributing less than 10% of the second-half global market-share," added Barker. "In 2013, the number of large-scale PV projects completed in these two countries alone will determine the level of annual growth from the industry, and by how much global demand can exceed the 35 GW mark."

WS510 Secondary Standard

WS510 Secondary Standard

In the monitoring of large photovoltaic (Utility Scale), in assessing potential sites (Solar-assessment), or in up and coming electricity cost saving initiatives projects (Commercial & Industrial), the WS510 now provides the market a secondary standard pyranometer, ultrasonic wind speed, ultrasonic wind direction, temperature, pressure and humidity all in a single unit.. This sensor meets the high demands of the world meteorological organization (WMO) through the active valving at air temperature measurement and the inertia- and maintenance-free measurement of wind speed and wind direction on the ultrasonic principle. Equipped with a Kipp & Zonen pyranometer of the secondary standards, the WS510-UMB Compact weather sensor from Lufft unites the precision of a variety of meteorological individual sensors in a single all-in-one device, for the first time.
