Energy from Waste in the Circular Economy - New Interview Released with Westminster City Council

SMi Group release new interview with Waste Service Manager, Jarno Stet, Ahead of his Keynote at the 9th Annual Energy from Waste Conference next month.

SMi Group have released an interview with Jarno Stet, Waste Service Manager from the City of Westminster, ahead of his keynote address at the 9th annual Energy from Waste conference in Central London on 8th and 9th December 2016.

Providing a local authority perspective, Jarno will discuss the role of Energy from Waste in the circular economy and offer insight on its impact to Westminster City Council. Strategic guidance will also be given on enhancing value for money services that contribute towards the circular economy.

In the run up to his presentation, SMi Group caught up with Jarno to discuss industry developments and his upcoming talk.

When asked about the EUs initiative surrounding the circular economy and what changes to expect within the industry he said:

"We need to make the most of the resources we have however we also have to be realistic. There will always be significant volumes of waste left which cant be recycled. This includes the residues and by-products from sorting and recycling. The age old argument that EFW crowds out recycling is rather tiring and has never been proven. EFW compliments the Circular Economy Package beautifully. It allows for material recovery and energy recovery from unrecyclable (residual) waste. Lack of EFW capacity can hinder recycling processes due to a lack of cost effective outlets for its residues. "

"EFW needs to remain at the forefront of residual waste treatment by recovering the maximum in energy (not just electricity) and resources (metals, IBA, APC and carbon etc.). Those facilities, e.g. D10 rated, that dont innovate and improve could well find their fortunes turning against them."
