Our most recent Engineering Services announcement is a major contract signed on March 6, 2013 with Volkswagen AG to advance development of fuel cells for use in powering demonstration cars in the automaker's fuel cell automotive research program. The initial contract term is 4-years, with an option for a 2-year extension, and an expected contract value of C$60-100 million. This is an exciting opportunity to leverage Ballard's capabilities in Engineering Services with one of the world's leading automotive players.
The contract with Volkswagen is not an exclusive arrangement, so Ballard will continue to actively work with other automotive OEMs, including Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC) and Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell. Intellectual property generated through this most recent agreement will belong to Volkswagen, although Ballard will have a royalty-free license for non-automotive applications and for buses.
Engineering Services work provides Ballard with a tremendous opportunity to enable product development in both automotive as well as non-automotive sectors. The later includes aerospace, military, batteries and small stationary sectors.
