How Hosting Capacity Analyses Can Save Both Time and Money

SEIA Releases Third Installment of its Grid Modernization White Paper Series

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - To kick off its grid modernization workshop at Solar Power International, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) released today the latest installment of its Improving Opportunities for Solar Through Grid Modernization white paper series, an in-depth look at state-level efforts to modernize the electric utility grid.

The white paper released today, Hosting Capacity: Using Increased Transparency of Grid Constraints to Accelerate Interconnection Processes, examines the ways in which states can improve the interconnection of solar systems by replacing "rules of thumb" with more accurate assessments of how much new solar and other resources the distribution grid can accommodate.

"As solar continues its impressive growth trajectory across America, were working with states to remove the unnecessary red tape that can lead to major delays and costs," said Sean Gallagher, SEIAs vice president of state affairs. "Through this series, were highlighting solutions that will modernize our nations electric grid, while providing Americans with reliable, low-cost power, like solar."

In this white paper, SEIA staff explore how greater transparency around real distribution system limitations can speed interconnection processes, reduce cost uncertainty and allow for more solar deployment. The paper explains how hosting capacity is being developed in two leading states, California and New York.

The series will continue with a white paper later this year on locational value and the state of "value-based" tariffs today.
