How come Portugal's cumulative solar capacity by the end of 2022 (2.59GW) was smaller than the annual capacity additions that Spain (3.4 GW) and not-that-sunny Netherlands (3 GW) managed to add that year? Boasting the highest solar radiation in Europe, Portugal has huge PV potential. However, despite often reaching over 50% of renewable energy production, only ~6% of that power output comes from solar. Investing in new technologies such as energy storage, floating solar, and green hydrogen, and simplifying the permitting process without sacrificing the environmental needs of Portugal are necessary updates to make. Thankfully, all these different strategies are being worked on and the Portuguese government is investing in the country's renewable future. A striking example: Europe's biggest solar park is being built in Santiago do Cac©m, Portugal!
