Southern Fuel Cell Coalition Announces Atlantic Station Advisory Panel
The Southern Fuel Cell Coalition is a regional initiative of the Atlanta-based Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE). The projects and activities of the SFCC promote interstate cooperation and regional job growth to meet the needs of a technology market niche that is expected to grow to $7.3 billion within the next 15 years.
Atlanta, GA -October 10, 2005 -- Leaders of the largest urban brownfield redevelopment project in the United States, Atlanta's Atlantic Station, are partnering with the Southern Fuel Cell Coalition (SFCC), the Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration, the Department of Energy, Georgia Tech, the State of Georgia, and others to demonstrate a variety of advanced energy technologies to power the project. Among the partners, a panel of energy and fuel cell experts assembled by the SFCC is leading the effort to plan and install an innovative fuel cell system that will generate nearly 8.2 megawatts of combined heat and electrical fuel cell power.
SFCC membership includes southern universities, national laboratories, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies working in partnership to identify and act upon opportunities to bring hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to market. With funding from the Federal Transit Administration, the SFCC is organizing a regional network of stakeholders, the start-up of three regional demonstration projects, and a national fuel cell technology conference in 2006. The Atlantic Station Advisory Panel is one of three projects to be seeded by the SFCC in 2005. At least five additional demonstration projects may be seeded in subsequent years.
Atlantic Station's Peter Bahouth states, "Our work with the Southern Fuel Cell Coalition is integral to helping Atlantic Station fulfill our commitment to superior environmental performance for the benefit of our tenants, visitors, and the community. The design and implementation of fuel cell technology will not only help provide clean, reliable energy to the development, it will also serve as a model for the potential of the technology itself."
The Advisory Panel consists of fuel cell experts from around the region and is charged with creating a consensus strategy for achieving Atlantic Station's fuel cell energy goals. At present the panel includes:
Dr. Tom Fuller, Director, Georgia Tech Center for Innovative Fuel Cell and Battery Technologies; Professor, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Dr. Rajat Sen, President & CEO, SENTECH, Inc.
Dr. Tim Armstrong, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Program Manager, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Dr. Ted Motyka, Manager, Hydrogen Technology Laboratory, Savannah River National Laboratory
Chris Davis, COO, Logan Energy Corporation
In addition to the energy efficiency benefits of the fuel cell and photovoltaic system currently envisioned, the project presents an unparalleled opportunity for alternative energy education and community outreach. Atlantic Station's close proximity to the Georgia Tech campus, the large number of residents on site, Atlanta's regional importance as a business and tourism destination, and the growing desire to educate young people about energy-efficient technologies combine to set the stage for a project worthy of local, regional, and national attention.
