On December 6, 2006, farmers welcomed increased commitment of the govt. for promoting renewable energy in its Pre-Budget Statement.

Gordon Brown – Chancellor, National Farmers' Union (NFU) – announced on 6 December 2006 that he’d be seeking advise on extending 40p excise rebate on biogas and 20p per liter rebate in fuel excise to the so-called “2nd Generation” biofuels. Thereby, confirming the view of the union that bio-energy will play a real & growing role in the country’s future.

NFU announced that it would go on to work with the retailers and manufacturers for ensuring an amplified role for biofuels.
