Konecranes Supplies Overhead Cranes to Bechtel for Landmark Sabine Pass Liquefaction Expansion in Louisiana

SPRINGFIELD, TX – Konecranes was selected to provide five overhead cranes for the first U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal equipped to both import and export liquefied natural gas.
Cheniere Energy Partners, L.P. will transform its Sabine Pass terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana into the first bi-directional facility capable of liquefying and exporting natural gas as well as importing and regasifying foreign-sourced LNG. Two new liquefaction trains utilizing the ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade process will be built by Bechtel, who is providing engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
The overhead cranes supplied by Konecranes conformed to Bechtel's requirement that the crane manufacturer be ISO-certified and capable of meeting all standards required for an LNG compressor building.
The scope of supply included four Konecranes 60-ton cranes, one 30-ton crane and 12 three-ton hand-geared jib cranes. The overhead cranes, all equipped with 10-ton auxiliary hoists, are classified CMAA "D" and will assist in maintaining the liquefaction equipment. The jib cranes will be used for work on individual valves.
Because they will operate in an outdoor area under a roof, seismic specifications and response to wind loads were considerations in the supply. The overhead cranes will be rated to operate in fairly high normal wind loads, with a wind/storm pin-lock design meeting a 150 MPH lockdown specification. The Hazardous Area Classification for these cranes is Class 1, Division 2, Groups C&D, Temp code T3.
"Konecranes has a long relationship with Bechtel in Houston and we were pleased to work with them on this exciting new project," said Doug Maclam, vice president, sales and marketing, Konecranes. "Our team worked closely with the Bechtel team to configure the cranes to meet the unique requirements of this application."
The cranes are scheduled to deliver in 2014.
