Leading Cambridge-based technology innovation company TTP has worked with M2M service provider Arkessa to deliver a smart home monitoring platform for a major research project commissioned by the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI).
The ETI launched the £3 million project in November 2012 to undertake a comprehensive behavioural study involving householders focused on heat and energy consumption in the UK. The study – to be scaled up to thousands of householders – is part of the ETI's Smart Systems and Heat (SSH) technology programme. The aim of the programme is to design, develop and demonstrate a cost-optimised, smart energy system suitable for future roll out within the UK.
Led by environment consultant PRP and University College London's Energy Institute, the project is delivered through a consortium also including The Technology Partnership (TTP), Frontier Economics, The Peabody Trust, National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and Hitachi.
TTP designed and integrated the sensor network technology that has been installed in homes to capture objective data on energy related human behaviour for this project. This builds on its successful experience of developing both standards-based and proprietary license-exempt low-power wireless networks for energy, smart home and smart building systems. M2M connectivity services from Arkessa are used to provide 3G coverage on commercial cellular networks through Arkessa's M2M access service to a data aggregation platform managed by TTP.
A demonstration of the data logged by the system from a TTP test site will be provided at TTP's stand at the Future of Wireless International Conference on 1 & 2 July 2013 at the Møller Centre, Churchill College Cambridge.
