Upsolar Teams with the Greenheart Project on Emissions-Free Ship

Solar-powered S/V Greenheart to drive global economic development opportunities

TOKYO – July 16, 2013 – Upsolar, a leading international provider of solar PV modules, today announced that its products will power operations aboard the first ship from Greenheart, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of low-cost, zero-emissions cargo vessels. The renewable energy-powered ship—dubbed the Sailing Vessel (S/V) Greenheart—will serve as a model of the group's mission to support environmental conservation, economic development and education opportunities around the world.

The Greenheart project designed the S/V Greenheart for use in developing coastal regions, focusing on high functionality and reliability while keeping operations and maintenance costs to a minimum.

Two kilowatts of Upsolar modules will be installed upon the S/V Greenheart's hatches, rooftops and awnings to power the ship's electrical needs, including navigation, communications and water desalination. Generated electricity from the PV system, as well as onboard wind energy technologies, will be collected in the ship's energy storage system for use day or night, enabling the S/V Greenheart to operate completely independent of fossil fuels.

"Our goal is to align with high-quality technology providers and organizations whose values align with our commitment to environmental and social responsibility. With Upsolar, we were able to accomplish both objectives in one fell swoop," said Gavin Allwright, Commercial Director of the Greenheart project. "The S/V Greenheart is only the beginning in our endeavor to provide clean, affordable means of transport to communities around the globe, and we look forward to working alongside Upsolar to expand fleet with the power of the sun."

The S/V Greenheart is scheduled to make its maiden voyage in early 2014 to test a range of possible applications, such as fishing and eco-tourism.

"The Greenheart project is a landmark initiative leading a fundamental shift toward sustainability in a centuries-old industry," said Zhe Jiang, CEO of Upsolar. "We are proud to have a hand in bringing to life this new model of cooperative global development and environmentally conscious enterprise."

About the Greenheart:
The Greenheart project is a simple idea, centered around a sailing cargo ship. Not the traditional, square-rigged tall ship of the nineteenth century, but a completely modern, efficient, cooperative trading vessel, powered by the sun and the wind alone. The first specially-designed ship, named the Sailing Vessel (S/V) Greenheart, will serve many functions. It will be a transport vessel, the international headquarters for the enterprise, and a training vessel for young people from around the world. The unique ship will also serve as a promotional platform, to publicize international cooperation, clean energy, Fair Trade and sustainable industry.
