Mouser Electronics-Sponsored Team Wins Awards in Solar Car Challenge

"Mouser Electronics is proud to support the Ben Barber solar race team"

DALLAS & FORT WORTH, Texas--Mouser Electronics, Inc., a top global distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, today congratulates the Ben Barber solar racing team of Mansfield, Texas, as winners of the State Energy Conservation Award from the State of Texas.

The Conservation Award, presented to the solar car team displaying outstanding engineering excellence, was awarded at the conclusion of the Solar Car Challenge, a week-long race that began in Fort Worth and ended July 30 in Los Angeles. The team also received a special proclamation from the Texas State Senate. The Challenge includes driving time of approximately 880 miles, spanning Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California with check points, rest stops and overnight stays for the students along the way.

The Ben Barber solar racing team, sponsored by Mouser Electronics for the second straight year, also finished 5th overall in the Solar Car Challenge in a field of 14 teams, who hailed from as far away as New York and California.

Cristian Almendariz, a senior at Mansfield High who was both an engineer and driver on the Ben Barber team, was presented the coveted Marks Award as the Student Most Embodying Solar Racing Spirit.

"Mouser Electronics is proud to support the Ben Barber solar race team," said Kevin Hess, Mouser's Vice President of Technical Marketing. "We are very pleased to have a role in this endeavor, and to motivate tomorrow's engineers to strive and excel in science, technology, engineering and math."

The Mansfield team, who call themselves The Shine Runners, used a car from a previous contest but the teens completely reconstructed it. This year's model, the Shine Runner II, is 300 pounds lighter, and has a top speed of 52 mph.

In addition to its support of Ben Barber Career Tech Academy, Mouser also sponsors the North Texas FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team at Ben Barber and annually supports both the FIRST FRC Dallas Regionals and the FIRST Championship Event.
