U.S. Battery Powers Green Horizons A Sustainable-Travel Adventure Documentary

U.S. Battery provides deep-cycle batteries for a sail boat retrofitted with solar panels, and is the basis of a documentary film on sustainable travel.

U.S. Battery provided ten of its REGC2 deep-cycle batteries to Pure Ocean Productions for a travel adventure film called Green Horizons. The film follows Jake and James Smith who will sail from Florida to the Bahamas in their 1978 sailboat named Valhalla, which is retrofitted to run on solar power. Sailing without any fossil fuel, the voyage is intended to demonstrate the significance of sustainable travel, the importance of quality food, and the values in being self-reliant in life.

"U.S. Battery's 6-volt REGC2's have worked excellent on Green Horizons journey off the grid," say James and Jake Smith. "They powered our electric motor through the Jupiter narrows, against strong current, and headwind enabling us to make it to Lake Worth Inlet in time to cross the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. The 48 and 12 volt battery systems charge extremely fast under solar power providing Valhalla with optimal energy for all systems from the electric motor to the inverter and everything else in-between."

The U.S. Battery REGC2 batteries installed into the sailboat, are the same batteries that are designed to provide the highest peak capacity, cycle life, and reliability for use in solar powered homes and businesses world-wide. "Pure Ocean Productions asked for our assistance, and allowed our engineers to look over their electrical system to access their power needs for the voyage," says Dwayne Porter, Marketing Manager at U.S. Battery Manufacturing. "The REGC2 6-volt batteries we supplied will allow the solar panels on Valhalla to easily re- charge the system, but the features in the batteries will ensure both reliability and durability in whatever conditions await during their journey."

U.S. Battery's RE Series batteries feature XC2™ formulation with Diamond Plate Technology® that enhance performance, charging, and the overall lifespan of the battery. RE Series batteries also include Defender™ moss shields that prevent the formation of "mossing shorts" (caused when positive active material particles dislodge from the plates, collect at the top of the cell elements, and cause a short circuit.) When combined with an exclusive Outside Positive (OSP™) battery design, battery life, overall capacity and stable performance over the life of the battery are dramatically increased.

Production of Green Horizons will begin in May 2014, but the Smith brothers are already making their way to the Bahamas for their first stop on their journey.
