MORL COMPLETES INSTALLATION OF METEROLOGICAL MAST IN OUTER MORAY FIRTH

The first infrastructure to be installed on site

Edinburgh, 24 September 2014: Moray Offshore Renewables (MORL) today announced that it had successfully completed the installation of its meteorological mast in its offshore wind zone in the outer Moray Firth; the first infrastructure to be installed on site. Commissioning is now being undertaken.

The mast measures wind conditions to enable optimal planning and operation of the Telford, Stevenson and MacColl offshore windfarms, for which the Scottish Government granted consent for deployment of up to 1116 MW earlier this year.

The mast utilised innovative techniques in both its construction and its installation.

Drace Infraestructuras, a division of ACS Corporation was the principle contractor to MORL for the overall fabrication and installation of the met mast and associated apparatus. Global Energy subsidiary Isleburn was subcontracted to undertake fabrication of the mast at its Invergordon facility in Easter Ross, and to undertake installation from the same port.

Commenting, MORL Project Director, Dan Finch said:

"This marks a major milestone in project progress. We have benefitted from the use of innovative installation techniques which are driving forward both cost reduction, and improvements in health and safety.

"Fabrication of the mast itself was undertaken by Global Energy at Invergordon, demonstrating how the skills and enterprise of the local economy are already successfully in competing to take advantage of the new markets which offshore wind is bringing.

"The involvement of Drace and Global Energy has brought new entrants to the offshore wind supply chain, delivered new investment to the UK and demonstrated new and innovative techniques that can be used in full-scale offshore wind deployment.

"This is the first infrastructure installed on site; success in securing a CfD from DECC in this October's allocation round is the last major hurdle which the project requires to clear in order to proceed to the Final Investment Decision for construction."
