The Clean Energy for America Act WASHINGTON, D.C.- The American Biogas Council (ABC) released the following statement in response to the introduction of Senator Ron Wyden's (D-OR) Technology Neutral Energy Tax Reform bill, the Clean Energy for America Act. Senator Wyden continues to forge a leadership role in promoting the next generation of energy sources by proposing technology neutral tax strategies for long-term growth and development of these next gen energy sources.

"History has shown that smart, well-placed energy tax measures can accelerate private sector investment, create new jobs and contribute to growth of domestically produced energy," said ABC Executive Director Patrick Serfass.

"More Americans will prosper when all forms of energy are treated fairly, especially if all forms of renewable energy receive equal incentives to reach commercial maturity. Senator Wyden's legislation provides a path for the development of renewable energy by removing the barrier of pegging incentives to a type of technology. This will create an environment where the biogas industry can thrive and many others. We appreciate Senator Wyden's elegant solution to this challenge."

ABC salutes these efforts and looks forward to working with Senator Wyden as Congress considers tax reform efforts during the 115th Congress.

About Biogas and Anaerobic Digestion
Biogas systems use anaerobic digestion to recycle organic waste, turning it into biogas, for energy (the gas), and valuable soil products (liquid and solids), using a natural, biological process. After simple processing, biogas is a renewable substitute for natural gas, and the digested materials-liquid and solids-can be turned into a wide variety of useful soil products, similar to peat moss, pellets and finished compost.

Today, the U.S. has over 2,200 sites producing biogas in all 50 states. The potential for growth of the U.S. biogas industry is huge. We count over 13,500 new sites ripe for development today on farms, at water treatment facilities and near cities. If fully realized, these new biogas systems could produce enough energy to power 7.5 million American homes and reduce emissions equivalent to removing up to 15.4 million passenger vehicles from the road. They would also catalyze an estimated $40 billion in capital deployment for construction activity which would result in approximately 335,000 short-term construction jobs and 23,000 permanent jobs to build and run the digesters.
