Wind Power and Wildlife Impacts

Natural Power is set to attend the fourth Conference on Wind Energy and Wildlife Impacts (CWW) which takes place on 6th - 8th September 2017 at the Estoril Congress Centre, Portugal.

Despite significant advances in understanding of the impacts of wind energy on wildlife, challenges remain regarding planning and policy, assessment of direct and indirect effects on wildlife, methodological approaches, technology development, and mitigation strategies and their effectiveness. The CWW 2017 aims to maintain and promote the international cooperation among researchers, developers, regulators and stakeholders that have contributed to building knowledge on this topic.

The global team, led by Director of Planning and Environment, Dr Chris Pendlebury and Head of Environment (North America), Christine Sutter, has expertise on a wide range of environmental issues, technologies and industry best practice and will be on hand throughout the event. They will also be presenting posters on a range of topics as follows:
- Key considerations for using modern radar systems for bird studies of wind energy projects
- Evidence of Nightjar disturbance distances during construction works
- Bat migration across the North Sea and the implications for offshore wind
- Precision and bias of bird fatality estimates from two contrasting carcass detection strategies
- A modelling approach to identify peat depth and its use within habitat management plans
- The use of a questions based framework to identify and assess the impact of wind energy projects to wildlife

Emily Nelson, Senior Environmental Consultant, will be talking in one of the parallel sessions on day one (6th Sept) on ‘Responses of marine top predators to an offshore wind farm: a cross-taxon comparison'.
